WC

The litter box or pan should be shallow enough for the cat to jump into
easily, but the sides should be high enough to contain scattered litter, because
a cat will scratch at the litter as part of her natural hygiene routine. Some
cats do well with covered litter boxes since they prefer privacy.

Most cats are easily trained to the litter box. They actually prefer using
one; however, sometimes accidents happen! There are many reasons why. Both
litter and the box must be kept clean, but if the box has been washed in a
strong detergent (especially one with amonia) the cat's natural scent may be
covered up. Mild soap and hot water are the best cleaners to use.
If the box is clean other factors may keep the cat from using
it. The box must be located in a quiet area, away from people and food dishes.
If the cat has been sick, especially with a bladder problem, he may associate
the box with pain and avoid it. Older cats can become senile. Thus a health
check may be needed.
If the cat is healthy and if the box is clean and in a quiet area,
other factors come into play. Any upset in a cat's environment can cause him to
use something other than the usual place. For example, the cat may not like a
new wing or room added to the house. Or if another pet has been added to the
family, the cat may be trying to establish his dominance.
After steps have been taken solve the problem, it may be necessary
to retrain the cat. Simply closing him in a small, quiet area with a clean box
and leaving him there until he uses it will often do the trick. It may take
several days before the tide is turned, so patience is a must!
