Most white cats with blue eyes have a genetic problem which causes them to be deaf due to deterioration of the cochlea in the inner ear. White cats with green or yellow eyes are far less likely to have this problem. What is truly amazing is the white cats who have one blue eye and one eye of another color are usually deaf on the blue-eyed side and hearing on the other side!

White cats are more susceptible to malignent melanoma than are dark cats just as fair skinned people are. Tying to limit your white cat's exposure to sunlight is one way to insure against this problem, but since all cats naturally love to sit in a sunny spot, this may not be possible. Any suspicious skin blemish should be checked out promptly by a vet. Early detection means a greater chance of a cure.

Most people think of cats as independant and aloof, needing only food and shelter to survive. Actually cats are "people animals" and thrive on human companionship.
