Although cats seem to respond to music, they may be actually responding to their own perceptions of the sound. In his book, Cat Lore, author Desmond Morris cites the example of a cat who would stare intently at a soprano until she hit a high a. The cat would reach out her paw and gently shut the singer's mouth! In reality the a is close to the pitch produced by a kitten in distress when it mews for help. Mr. Morris observes that the cat may have thought the singer was a kitten and was trying to reach out and help in her own way!
The cat produces an infinite number of different vocal sounds to communicate her needs and feelings. By the time a kitten is twelve weeks old it will have mastered at least 16 different sounds. Adult cats have over 100 vocal sounds; a big contrast to dogs who are limited to about 14!

The most intriguing sound a cat makes is the hiss. It may be that the sound is supposed to imitate that of a snake, warning would-be enemies to steer clear or else!
The Andrew Loyd Webber musical, Cats, is the longest-running musical ever performed in London's West End.
