Contrary to popular belief, cats can and should be trained. This isn't the same kind of obedience training that dogs get, but cats do need to learn how to behave as a member of the family.

Most cats can be taught to obey simple rules like not scratching the couch, eating plants or jumping up on the kitchen counter.

Some cats can be trained by rewarding them with food. Once a trick or a new behavior has been learned, praise and attention are enough motivation.

Most kittens are eager to learn how to please you. You can easily correct behavior in a young cat with a gentle but firm tone and a demonstrarion of the proper way to do things.
Praise your kitten when you point out the litter box or the scratching post. Repeated, gentle and consistent training gets results.

Although cat owners like to think of their cats as being independant and answerable to no one, the truth is that some training establishes the human as the "alpha-cat" thus avoiding extreme behavoir problems such as biting, or attacking people.
